The Monumentalization of Infrastructure

Lior Grundman’s "MA'ATZ" project is a profound visual exploration that elevates the "transparent" night-shift workers of Israel's national infrastructure to the status of icons. By channeling the heroic lighting style of Yousuf Karsh, Grundman recontextualizes the highway worker—not as a mere cog in a socio-economic machine, but as a sovereign subject of dignity and weight. The project masterfully navigates the tension between the chaotic, industrial reality of asphalt and grime and the meticulous, architectural precision of fine-art portraiture. Ultimately, these images serve as a powerful reminder that the physical foundations of our modern lives are forged in the darkness by individuals whose humanity is now brought into the light with monumental grace.

פרויקט הצילום מוציא לאור את עובדי הלילה של "מע"צ" (נתיבי ישראל) – האנשים שמתקנים את הכבישים בזמן שכולנו ישנים. במקום לראות בהם "פועלים שקופים" שנבלעים בחשיכה, השתמשתי בתאורה דרמטית ומחמיאה כדי להפוך אותם לגיבורים של ממש. בעזרת צילום מקרוב, עם כל האבק והעייפות, מעניק להם כבוד ועוצמה ששמורים בדרך כלל למנהיגים או למפורסמים. כך, הפרויקט מזכיר לנו שהאנשים האנונימיים שעובדים בשולי הכביש הם אלו שבונים את היסודות של המדינה, והוא נותן להם את הבמה וההערכה שמגיעה להם.
